Pitching Rules (10U & 12U)
14U Utilizes the 30/40 Rule and no more than 95 pitches in one day. See DBB Rulebook for more details.
Coaches must pick up and turn in a pitch count card after every game played. Cards and counters may be picked up and returned to the League Office. Failure to complete a pitch count card penalties are a warning for a the first offense, one (1) game suspension for a second offense, and forfeiture of a win for the third and subsequent offenses.
Rest Rules (Regular Season Play Only)
1-30 Pitches No Rest
31 - 45 Pitches 1 Day Rest
46-65 Pitches 2 Days Rest
66+ Pitches 3 Days Rest
A day is defined as 12:00AM to 11:59PM. Days rest do not begin until the next for day. For example, a player throws 70 pitches on Saturday. The pitcher is required to rest three (3) days (Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday) and is eligible to pitch again on Wednesday.
Daily, weekly and annual overuse is the greatest risk to a youth pitcher's health according to medical experts in sports injuries. Numerous studies have shown that pitchers who throw more pitches per game and those who do not adequately rest between appearances are at an elevated risk of injury.
In recent years, researchers and medical professionals in the field of sports medicine have determined that the actual number of pitches thrown (i.e., pitch count) is a safer way to regulate pitching in youth baseball. DYB has a rich history of emphasizing safety in youth baseball and recognize the widespread concern for protecting youth pitcher’s arms.
Pitchers who throw 41 or more pitches in a day may not catch; and catchers who catch four (4) or more innings in a day may not pitch.
Penalties for violating pitch count rules could lead to the suspension of the head coach or forfeiture of wins.
Warm-up pitches do not count towards a players pitch count. Players are allotted eight preparatory pitches or one minute, whichever comes first.
